Perception - the process of attaining awareness. Well, in other words, the way of understanding the world. Perception is indeed an essential part of communication as it influences ones communication choices. A perception is not necessarily true, there is a very high possibility for it to be false. Many of us perceive different situations in different ways. As a COMMON human being, I also make my own perceptions . The short story below shows an example of a wrong perception made by me.
At the beginning of this semester, I was in a terrible state of confusion as I did know what subjects to choose as my electives. I was sure to take Psychology and Business as my electives for my final semester but I wasn't sure of what subjects I wanted to take for this semester. Many of my friends who have been studying in HELP told me to take Introduction To Hospitality And Tourism. At first, I was a bit reluctant to take that subject because it had nothing to do with what I am planning to do in the future. Since I was running out of choices, I had to make a decision, and Tourism it was. Initially, most of the "seniors" told me that Introduction To Hospitality And Tourism is a very easy subject. Therefore, my perception made on this subject was exactly what I had heard from them. Unfortunately, when I attended the first class and when I was introduced to the subject in depth, I realized that my perception was totally wrong.
This is because Introduction To Hospitality And Tourism is a subject that requires a lot of patience, as the lectures are pretty long. We'll have to sit in the Lecture Theater for at least three hours. Sitting in one place for three hours can be very boring and frustrating. In order to fulfill that, you need to have a lot of patience.
Secondly, this subject also requires a great amount of passion. We'll have to like the subject in order to understand it better. Although this concept applies to all the other subjects, this particular subject definitely requires a tinge of extra passion. Moreover, this subject requires you to work really hard and it is not EASY at all!!! As for me, I had a tough time initially, but now, I am slowly beginning to like this subject.
Therefore, we shouldn't simply make perceptions without clarifying it. I was completely wrong because I made a wrong perception about this subject just by listening to what others had to say. Now, I've learnt that although it is common for one to make perceptions, he or she has to make it a point to clarify the perception or else this can lead to many other problems.
