Speak Up!

Mumbling is when you speak so muted on enunciation to the extent that people don't understand what you are actually trying to phrase. The reason why I pointed out on mumbling because it happens to me in my everyday life. When I speak, I tend to mumble quite often. For example, when I'm trying to say something or ask anything to my mom, her response will be "What? Speak up. I can't hear you". It's really annoying and frustrating that it becomes a habit of mine. It's not that I don't know how to speak. The problem is that I tend to swallow my voice when I'm talking. When listening to what all the people around me communicate, I envy them sometimes cause they have the ability to speak very distinctly. However, I would love to master on how to speak without mumbling and here are some of pointers.

1) Slow down
  • When talking too fast, your words stumble over each other. Practice the habit of talking at a slow pace but not too slow that it bores the person that you're talking to. Medium pace is fine.
2) Practice
  • Try to record yourself talking to a tape recorder or computer with a microphone. After that, try to listen back to your recordings. This might give you the chance to perceive what is fathomable, where your sentence goes wrong and so on.
3) Speak with inflection
  • When questioning, it should go up in pitch at the end. When trying to stating a statement, your tone should go down. It is important to notice what words and syllables get accentuate.
4) Listen to others
  • Listen to people who are good at enunciating such as television announcers and radio DJ. Not only that but notice how they express words, at what pace they talk and more.
5) Practice pronouncing words
  • Practice by reading articles, magazines, or newspapers out loud and pronouncing every word accurately and coherently.
